Why You Should Be Shopping Local
The other day I stumbled across a post that really got my knickers in a knot. A photo was posted which at first glance looked like local store Untitled&Co's very cool and ORIGINAL strap dresses. After reading the caption and taking a better look at the photo, I realized I was staring at an H&M design. My jaw dropped but I was the least surprised by what I had seen.
There’s nothing worse than seeing one of your pieces copped by a big name brand. Not only will they make 10 times the amount you did… but it'll probably happen faster than it took you to design it….
And unfortunately it happens ALL THE TIME.
Big corporations are easy to fall for.. They have cool designs, decent prices and are just about everywhere. There may have a quick and easy factor, but the benefits from shopping locally far outweighs purchasing brand name items.
Independent artists everywhere work day and night only to get side-swiped by big companies... Choosing to shop from smaller businesses not only allows you to enjoy a unique and personal experience but helps support a much bigger cause.
IT HELPS CREATE JOBS.
When shopping local you help to employ a good chunk of your cities residents. Small businesses tend to buy most of their materials from local farms, vendors and other independent shops.

YOUR MONEY STAYS IN THE COMMUNITY.
Shopping local ensures your dollar goes back into the cities economy and other small businesses. While franchises may save you a couple bucks, it's at the cost of economic displacement. Shifting sales from one city to another, much of your money spent leaves the community immediately.
STAYING UNIQUE.
So you’re tired of spending money on clothes everyone will own in a week. One of my favourite things about shopping local is the unique factor. These one-of-a-kind businesses are an essential part in making our community a home. The places we visit and the stores we shop in all define Toronto as a distinct character.
THEY GIVE BACK.
Did you know that non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from small businesses.1

YOU KNOW WHERE IT'S COMING FROM.
Believe it or not, local businesses assist in environmental sustainability. Recycling their earnings back into other local companies are essential for reducing pollutants, air and water toxins. Shopping local also ensures a stance against forced labour and sweatshops.

MEET PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY
In a perfect world one-of-a-kind businesses and unique character have an economic advantage. Interview after interview I take away more knowledge about Toronto’s community and a solid friendship. After chatting up local owners in Toronto, my favourite part is hearing how passionate they are about every item they sell.
Think local & shop local. What are your favourite independent stores around town?
